Tift
County Stadium, affectionately known as The Devil's Den,
was dedicated on September 16, 1966 before its first
ever Region 1-AAA (highest class) game against its long
time foe, the Atlanta Journal's #1 ranked Moultrie
Packers.
The Golden Herd came into
the game with a perfect record after defeating the
former #1 team, the Lanier Poets, the week before.
This was Coach Virgil "Bud" Willis' first full year as
the Packers head coach. He was a former Tifton
Blue Devil and Alabama captain and star.
The Blue Devils, coached by
future GHSA Director Tommy Guillebeau, upset the Packer
that night by the score of 19-14 after a 54 yard TD pass
to seal the win.
This upset sprung the Devils
to a 7-3 season, a third place finish in the ultra tough
Region 1-AAA. Unfortunately, in those days, only
the region champion was allowed to participate in the
state playoffs.
The Valdosta Wildcats went
on to win the Georgia state AAA crown that year with a
14-3 win over another set of Blue Devils, from Marietta.
Tift County Stadium was
rededicated as Gene Brodie Field on September 28, 2001
to honor Brodie, who was the main force for stadium
expansion in 1981. Of his 131 wins while a Tift,
67 were claimed at Tift County Stadium.
Brodie Field seats about
10,000 fans comfortably. However, as many as
15,000 were said to be on hand for a 1981 playoff game
against another long time rival, the Thomasville
Bulldogs.
Ironically, Blue Devil teams
have played four state championship games, and none have
been hosted at Tift County Stadium/Brodie Field. |
